I just have to add that I've been captivated by the song "Swallowed by the Sea", the last track on the new record. While I love Two Cow for their balls-out, rock-your-face-off live shows, this slower song has stuck with me for days now. Shane's less-than-awesome voice fits the song like a glove, the sparse lyrics work so well with the cool harmonica and there's just something about the guitar...Listen to it at their myspace page:

What the hell is this?
This is about "American Rock" - loud guitars, sweat, beer on the floor - music by bands that spent as much time in the their basements as a kid listening to Neil Young and Crazy Horse rock the fuck out as I did .
I'm talking out bands like Slobberbone, Uncle Tupelo, Two Cow Garage, Oakley Hall, Lucero, Drive By Truckers, Glossary, Old 97s. And there's the more main-stream bands like Wilco, Cracker... Did I mention Slobberbone?

labels that don't work for me:
"alt-country" - usually too country for me. I grew up in Queens, NY for christsakes - I have a country music threshold that shouldn't be exceeded
"roots-rock" - usually too wussy for me
"country-rock" - not bad, but often ends up leaning too much towards the wussy side of the aisle. I want more rocking.
"southern rock" - brings up mental images of a 42-year old diesel mechanic* with a beer gut and a black Harley shirt on at an Outlaws concert with his toofless old lady
* I've got nothing agaist diesel mechanics. I'm just trying to paint a picture here folks
So I ended up with the admittedly vague/broad "American Rock". If you don't like it:
(1) too bad
and/or
(2) suggest a better label. I'll consider it. If it doesn't totally suck.
